Romeo and Juliet Nishas Draft/Planning

Ideas for FanFic:

Romeo and Juliet - Gangs of New York cross over
Characters: Romeo Montague (Irish immigrant), Juliet Capulet (General's Daughter), General Capulet (General of the Confederate Army), Captain Tybalt (antagonist)
Setting: my fan fiction will be an alternate ending to the book, where neither heroin dies.

My references:

Romeo, Romeo Where art thou Romeo??

Setting New York 1863

The idea that I have is a mix between the romance of Romeo and Juliet and action and drama of Gangs of New York. I will be keeping with the theme of star crossed lovers from two families. At the same time the setting is New York 1863 during the American Civil War.

The idea is that Romeo is an Irish immigrant living in Lower Manhattan's Five Points part of the working class rebellion. Lady Juliet is the daughter of General Capulet in charge of maintaining the law of the Five Points.

The antagonist of the story is Tybalt who is a Captain in General Capulet's regiment. Captain Tybalt has his eye on the General's daughter, seeing her as a way up the ladder in Society.

'The balcony scene'

This FanFic is basically going to be a re-write of the final Act/Scene of Romeo and Juliet. I'm hoping that the two eras are not too mixed together i.e use of language and setting.
I would like to have put a bit of humor in there, however the end of Romeo and Juliet is not very humorous. Although I am sure that most people appreciate the original ending still wish that the couple could have lived.

Shakespeare is a genius!! I love literature and think that he had one of the best literary minds ever, but I am also a romantic at heart and want a happier ending for one of the best couples in history whether fictional or real.

Don't you agree? the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet being amazing as it is, a powerful read to anyone, but in reality we all hoped and cried for a better ending?

  2. Hi Nisha - I love all these ideas and what you have done with the original texts, plots, characters, and especially power structures!
Yay for Juliet NOT dying! ... not in to heroines dying, but how to maintain the impact both these narratives originally have without those deaths??
Doesn't look like you can go too wrong here to me - good luck :)
