Bullseye
I
knew I wasn’t normal.
It
wasn’t just the fact that I was adopted, or because I was diagnosed with
dyslexia and ADHD. I saw things, weird things like creepy people and monsters.
They usually sneered and smirked their snarly smiles at me. To this day, I had
been hoping to meet someone like me.
One
afternoon my prayers were answered.
Hallelujah!
It
happened the day I took a shortcut down an alleyway. One minute I was alone
with the curious cats and rotting rubbish, then he appeared. Eight feet tall,
crooked teeth, discoloured skin, and if I’m not mistaken, the cause of the
atrocious aroma. It was like the worlds gases amassed into one place. His
superior presence didn’t last long.
A
burly girl sprinted onto scene. The girl with the camouflage jacket had her hair
float, caused by her spears tip. The moulded metal furiously flashed with
energy as she charged. As quick as she entered, the monstrous man was dead. A little
acrobatics and a flick of her wrist, the warrior held her trophy. The spear sat
vertical as crimson blood wept down the shaft marking her hand. The tip now
supported the monsters one and only eye the size of a tennis ball, a perfect
hit right through the pupil.
My
eye refused to twitch as I looked upon her.
“You
need to come with me.”
Those
words bought me to camp. Camp Half-Blood.
They
gave me a debriefing, sugar-coating the facts. In the end it was just, ‘Oh my
God, I’m going to be fighting for survival for the rest of my life.’
Like
the other campers, minus the satyrs, dryads, and nymphs, I was a Half-Blood.
Half mortal and half God. Somewhere in the sky Mount Olympus sat high. To be
frank, the Greek Gods were very much alive. Until I was claimed I wouldn’t know
which God was my parent. I had no proper place.
They
set me up for orientation the same day I arrived. Rush, rush, rush.
He
had jet-black hair and murky green eyes. “Percy Jackson.”
I
shook his hand and introduced myself.
“I
know it’s a little mind blowing but you’ll get used to it,” he said.
I
rolled my eyes as I watched the Loch-Ness monster slink silently through the
lake behind him.
Percy
laughed, “I can show you better than I could tell you.”
I
followed Percy Jackson, the legendary hero other campers mentioned, who had
saved the world countless times. He showed me the fields of vines that birthed
red infants. He showed me the big house, which had a mummy in the attic. He
also showed me the stables, the pavilion where we would eat, and his cabin.
“This
is my cabin, I don’t have any half siblings to share it with yet.”
A
salty breeze brushed my hair as I gazed at the shells decorating the exterior.
A small trident flowed along the doorframe. I wondered if he was good at
surfing.
We
trekked back around the twelve cabins shaped like a ‘U’. Percy’s sat at the
base as one of the three. He walked ahead hunched over.
“Hey,
guys!”
We
turned to see Grover the satyr trot towards us. His hooves clipped the ground
trailing a dust cloud. His lower half gave him the ability to climb any hill
like a goat. Grover slapped an arm over Percy’s shoulder, “Good seeing you both.
Has Percy shown you the archery range yet? Com’on, let's go.”
Grover
jumped up and down dragging Percy as his tiny horns led the way. I followed
like a child.
Yellow
straw were packed into bales, which leaned on brown crates. They lined along
the backing shed, thick red lines indented the straw face. The bright leaves overhead
blocked out the orange heat and the shadow cast a cool cave.
I looked at the closest target while Grover
sorted the equipment. I started to search for Percy when I spotted him. He sat
in the darkest part of the shade, most of his features hidden from me. His eyes
were dulled, almost hollow.
I caught Grover's eyes as he ambled towards
me with a long curved wooden stick. Its pale brown held strength as it was imprisoned by a white string. I
admired it thoroughly, "This is so cool, I've always wanted to do
this."
He handed over a quiver, arrows and finger
tab. Grover ran me through the basics, making sure my performance was right. "You're
a natural. Keep aiming. I'ma talk to Percy."
Grover loped over to Percy and sat next to
him. "You ok, Percy my man?"
Reaching past my shoulder I grabbed an arrow
by the nock and fletches. Percy's sigh filled the silence, "I don't know,
Grover. After showing the newcomer my cabin, I saw her."
"Annabeth?"
"Yeah. Grover... I feel like there's
something pushing us apart. It's like she's avoiding me, or maybe I'm not..."
I set my arrow and pulled back, my elbow led the way. With my finger rested at
the corner of my mouth the feathers brushed my flushed cheek. I aimed down the
shaft of the arrow, then released.
"You're not what?" Grover piped
in. "You don't need to be anyone. Just be you. Maybe what's happening is
that your words aren't hitting her right."
My arrow split the red and straw gave way.
I heard Grover's hooves clop against stones,
"Maybe you need to hit her in the right spot."
"You know, Grover." Percy voice
wobbled. "You're a good friend. You may be right, I should talk to
her."
"There she is now," Grover said
leaping to his feet while Percy scrambled to get his bearings.
I stared at my protruding points then looked
to see where Grover was indicating. The anxious hero was wiping dust off his blue
jeans, "Where?"
I could just make out a slim blonde under
the shade of the stables roofing. What happened next surprised me.
A burly girl sprinted towards the stables.
She was wearing a camouflage jacket. Both girls embraced.
Grover pointed his finger, "There.
She's kissing..." He dropped his arm.
Percy slid his hand through his hair,
"Oh, man. I should have known."
Grover slapped him on the back, "Sorry.
You are so screwed. Clarisse is more in her league than you are."
"Thanks, glad to know I have your
support. I think she just needs a little space. Titans are easier to understand
then girls." Percy smiled at me, "No offence."
I grinned and took another arrow from the
quiver. Both boys turned their back on the display. Grover trotted over and
observed my shot, "Whoa. You split your own arrow. When Percy shoots he
does Percy Jacksons. You just did a Robin Hood."
Percy chuckled and slung an arm over my
shoulder, "Nice shot, Robin. You'll fit in better than I ever did."
I laughed, "Thanks, Percy. I could help
you bullseye your girl."
Most people do Fan-Fiction between Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, [Percabeth]
I decided to break that. I then paired Annabeth with Clarisse who she usually doesn't get along with. And not many people do Fan-Fiction about them.
Some Fan-Fiction links....
Not all of them may be great, but it's just to establish how the characters are perceived. As well as knowing some of the relationships between them.
