Naomi Currie Planning... 'Brain Splatter'

May I just say, Percy Jackson?
When thinking of a original world I could take from someone else, I thought Percy Jackson. Something I could squeeze, brake, drop and deform, not that you couldn't do that with any other imaginative world that's not yours.
I feel like a kid outside the dairy thinking, 'I'm gonna steal this, that and, ooh, definitely this.'
almost lie looking at a woman as a sales product saying, "Hmm... This looks good, I'll take that." Grabbing all the qualities, characteristics or parts you like, whether it's good or bad, then leaving the rest.
   The scraps.
Something you don't like or can't change to fit your needs. It's not vile, but it feels dirty and unruly.

I'd been a fan since I was eleven. I remember a classmate decided to bring in a book for the teacher to read to the rest of us. A ten minute reading session for the hypo-active children to 'calm the fuck down.'
And guess what the book was called?
Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan.

Rick Riordan

The first book in the series, also the first book I brought for myself.
   Let the fandom begin.

To be frank, I wouldn't refer myself as a 'true fan,' or otherwise known as; Addictive Followers, Stalkers of Literature, and possibly the plain old, One Who is Simply Obsessed.

Aggressive

My fan frame of mind is more passive, not as aggressive as some.

Passive
My routine is; buy a book, (roughly as soon as it comes out), read within a day or two, wait another year... Repeat process.
   Patience, my love.

   Fan-fiction, anyone?
Although it was never in hard copy, I have done fan-fiction. I'd classify it as daydreaming, if you will. More or less making my own situations and scenes, but it never strayed far from the original world/plot and characters to a large extent.
When I finish a book I do wonder what happens next as much as the next person. I ask question even though there is no one there, and imagine the possibilities that could happen.
   But to have it written?
   You must be a thief!

   So... Percy Jackson as fan-fiction.
In the original world, Rick Riordan basically plays with a bunch of teenagers who are half-bloods. Sons and daughters of Greek Gods, essentially one parents a God, the other mortal.
It has the general plot. An issue rises, must resolve issue, if issue not resolved it'll be the end of the world. All of a sudden hope is chucked in, and issue resolved. Quite a few stories have this plot, but some have quirks that make it unique.
In most of Rick Riordans books, perhaps all of them, the 'young heroes' have to either, find, retrieve, save or stop someone or something. Repetitive and typical, but still entertaining.

   Why?
Percy Jackson has the usual protagonists  and main objectives, but it's what Rick has done with the story. The offshoots, the branches on the tree he has developed. The world he has created has twists and turns, secrets, surprises, and he has always done cliffhangers. Most readers should be familiar with the, "Argh, God dammit," moments.

I enjoy fiction novels that mix the truth with the authors imagination. It reminds me of science fiction. Facts and fiction. Truth and imagination. Both put together, the end result?
   Way out of proportion.
And it is that that makes me say, "Oh yes, I like this."
Mixing facts and fiction seem to be the way to go. The facts give you the, 'I know this,' feeling. Where the fiction expands from the facts, and even into unfamiliar territory. Broadens the road and creates new alleyways. soon enough a village is born. Soon enough a city has grown. Soon enough a grand piece of literature is complete.

Rick has taken Greek Mythology, bent and deformed them to his will. I was wondering if this was a form of fan-fiction. At first I did not realize but later, as my knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome widened, I knew. The quest and characters, what the protagonists did and faced, I had a sense of Deja-vu.
It seems Rick has done a fan-fiction novel based on The Odyssey by Homer, more or less, Greek Mythology itself. He has taken events, symbols, characters, plus input from his own imagination to write the series.
   Facts and fiction.
Every author takes at least some small part of reality, culture or religion to contribute to their work. Does it really matter? Perhaps a majority of written works are fan-fiction.

   Percy Jackson as Fan-fiction?
To do a fan-fiction story on the Percy Jackson world which might be a fan-fiction novel to The Odyssey.
   Right, screw this.
I've got a stereo-typical South Auckland reputation to uphold.
I'm gonna steal this, that and, ooh, definitely this.

   Peace Note:
Tis is my thirst blog. I am going to pleasure treasure this foureva. Feel three two comment, and discus. As well ass comment on my Grandma spalling present future past tense and, punchuation.
   And utter tinks, like plural.
   Thanks you.

  1. Hi naomi,
I really enjoyed this post and think you write very well and in a very interesting way.
I too am a daydream fanfic composer! I am also a reader who likes to be challenged, and to figure things out for myself, so I don't think it's necessary for the text itself to provide all the answers to the reader.
I love you play on words and the use of images! I can't see how you can go wrong with this brief :)
P.S. Didn't we have some kinds of recent NZ TV series having old nordic (or something) gods in the modern day world? Odin...?? Mix it up, thief!! :)

  3. Thanks for your comments.
I wasn't sure how people would react to the post. The post 'Brain Splatter' is self explanatory. My thoughts and ideas on a page. I was hoping to use this as a stepping stone for my fan-fiction. Since this is my first time, I felt I should wrap my head around it.
I was going to rant about the movie of Percy Jackson and how it was fan-fiction, but then it would drag on too long.

Just a heads up, I was going to keep my draft simple. Although I hope it doesn't become a pointless story.

    P.S. Thanks you!

  4. HI Naiomi, I also enjoyed reading your post. I love to think of my own ending to whatever I read or continue the plot on where I would like the characters to lead.
I look forward to your FanFic, must say that Gollum threw me a bit in the beginning. lol Definitely like the aggressive face.

    1. Thanks.
I would have liked to add more, but then it would have been too long. Gollum was for my own amusement as well as others. And plus, he has great facials.
